Three faults cover almost every call
A disposal that does nothing at all when switched on has usually tripped its own overload. The reset button on the underside of the unit puts it back, and if that is all it needed, the visit is over before it starts. It is worth trying before booking anybody.
A disposal that hums without turning is jammed rather than dead. The motor is powered and the grinding plate is not moving, and the hex key that came with the unit turns the plate manually from below to free whatever is wedged in it. Leaving it humming is what actually kills the motor.
