Why New Faucets Feel Weaker Than the One You Replaced
Before you assume the new tap is faulty, work out how much of the change is code and how much is your plumbing.
Weak at one tap only?

Part of this is deliberate
A faucet fitted in 1995 and a faucet bought this year are not designed to deliver the same amount of water. Maximum flow rates for new fixtures are set by the adopted code rather than by the manufacturer. Georgia works to the International Plumbing Code (IPC) with state amendments, and those amendments brought high efficiency fixture requirements into new permitted construction from the middle of 2012.
So a replacement tap in a kitchen or bathroom will move less water per minute than the one it replaced, and it will do it on purpose. Modern aerators compensate by shaping the stream so it feels fuller than the raw number suggests, which works well on some designs and less well on others.
The useful question is therefore not whether the new tap is weaker. It is whether it is weaker than it should be, and there are three quick ways to tell.
Test one: does the problem travel?
Run the tap next to it, then a tap in another room, then a shower. If every outlet in the house is poor, the new faucet is a bystander and the fault is upstream.
If only the new tap is poor, the cause is almost always at or immediately behind that fixture. Aerator, supply connector, or the shutoff valve underneath.
If the tap is poor on hot but fine on cold, or the reverse, that isolates one side of the supply and points at either the water heater side or a specific valve rather than at the faucet at all.

The aerator is the first thing to check and the last thing people try. Any work on the supply, including a repair somewhere else in the street, sends debris downstream that lodges in the nearest screen. It unscrews by hand or with a cloth and takes a minute.
The part that actually causes trouble in older Austell houses
The faucet is rarely the difficult part of a faucet job here. The shutoff valve under the sink is.
Older multi turn angle stops seize in the open position and then weep from the packing the moment they are turned. In a house that has not had that cabinet touched in twenty years, a fifteen minute swap becomes a longer job the instant someone reaches for the valve.
There is a second complication specific to this area's building era. Houses built between the late 1970s and the mid 1990s were frequently plumbed in polybutylene, and where that grey pipe comes through the cabinet as a stub out, disturbing it carries real risk. Recognising it before applying a wrench is the whole trick, and it is why the detail on our faucet page spends more time on the valve than on the tap.
Worth knowing before you buy a replacement tap
A very cheap fixture with proprietary parts is the one that drips in three years with nothing available to replace it.
- How many holes the sink or worktop is drilled for.
- Whether the existing stops are quarter turn or older multi turn.
- The reach and height you actually want over the bowl.
- Whether the pipe under the sink is grey polybutylene.
- Whether the model uses proprietary cartridges, which matters in five years.
- Whether there is a sprayer or dispenser hole to reuse or fill.
When low pressure is the real story
If pressure is poor at every fixture and has been declining over years rather than since the new tap went in, that is a supply problem rather than a fixture one. In pre 1960 housing the usual cause is galvanized steel narrowing from the inside until the internal diameter is a fraction of what it was.
That is not fixed by better taps. It is fixed by replacing the affected runs, which can be staged by zone rather than done in one disruptive stretch. Where the drop is sudden rather than gradual, a partially closed valve or a failing pressure reducing valve is the more likely explanation and is worth ruling out first, occasionally alongside proper leak detection if the meter is also moving.

Can I remove the flow restrictor from a new faucet?
It is physically possible on many models and it is not something we would recommend. The restrictor is part of how the fixture meets the flow rate it was certified to, and removing it also removes the screen that catches debris.
If the flow genuinely feels wrong, the aerator, the stop and the supply connector are the things worth checking first.
Why is only my hot water weak?
That isolates one side of the supply. The usual causes are an angle stop that is not fully open, a partly blocked flexible connector, or debris that entered the hot side during work at the water heater.
Where it affects hot water at every fixture rather than one, the heater itself and the pipework around it become the place to look.
Should the plumber replace my shutoff valves at the same time?
On older housing, usually yes, and it is worth agreeing before the job starts rather than discovering it mid visit. Multi turn stops that have not moved in decades often will not seal again once disturbed.
Getting that into the quote up front is what avoids the classic surprise on the invoice.
Is low pressure a sign of a leak somewhere?
It can be, though it is not the most common cause. A significant supply leak usually shows on the meter as well, so the meter test is the quick way to separate the two.
Gradual decline across years in an older house more often means the pipe itself has narrowed rather than that water is escaping.
Weak at every tap, not just the new one?
Call and say whether it is one fixture or the whole house. Those are two completely different visits.
