Can Your Gas Line Handle a Tankless Water Heater?
Before comparing brands, work out what your house would need. It is the part that decides the price.

Why the appliance is the cheap part
A storage tank sips gas. It heats a reservoir slowly and holds it, so the burner runs at modest input for a while. A tankless unit does the opposite: it heats water as it passes, which means it demands its full rated input the instant somebody opens a hot tap.
That input is several times what the tank it replaces ever asked for. A half inch gas branch that fed a forty gallon heater perfectly well for twenty years is frequently inadequate for the unit going in its place, and the fix is a larger run back toward the meter rather than a different appliance.
This is the single biggest reason two quotes for the same model come back thousands apart. One has priced the gas work and the other has not yet discovered it.
The three things that decide feasibility
Gas capacity
Total connected load, pipe size, run length and fitting count all feed into a sizing calculation. The answer is often that the branch at the heater is fine but the run back to the meter is not, and occasionally that the meter itself needs the utility involved.
Venting route
A tankless unit needs its own sealed venting and cannot share the flue the old tank used. Where that vent can physically run, through a wall or up through the roof, often decides where the unit can go at all.
Condensate and drainage
A condensing model produces acidic condensate that needs a drain and usually neutralisation. Somewhere for that to go is part of the siting decision rather than an afterthought.

Ask every quote to itemise the gas and venting separately. If one number is dramatically lower, the usual explanation is that it has not accounted for the supply upgrade. That discovery does not go away, it just arrives mid installation instead of during the decision.
The part of this that works in Georgia's favour
A tankless unit does not store hot water, it raises the temperature of water passing through. Its usable output therefore depends on how cold that water is when it arrives, which is why the same model performs very differently in different climates.
North Georgia's incoming water is moderate for most of the year. A correctly sized unit here delivers meaningfully more simultaneous flow than the same unit would in a northern state, which means you can often specify a smaller model than a national sizing chart suggests.
The local water helps a second time. Descaling is a genuine maintenance item on these systems, and it is less frequent on treated surface water from Allatoona Lake and the Chattahoochee than it would be on hard groundwater. Less frequent is not never, and skipping it entirely still shortens the life of the heat exchanger.
Work these out before you call for quotes
That last one is the honest test. If a working tank is meeting demand, the payback argument alone rarely justifies the gas and venting work.
- Where the current heater sits and where a wall mounted unit could go.
- Whether there is an exterior wall or roof route available for venting.
- What else runs on gas in the house, since sizing covers total connected load.
- Whether there is a drain within reach of the proposed location.
- Whether the location is conditioned or exposed, which matters for freeze protection.
- Whether you actually run out of hot water, or simply want something newer.
Freeze protection is not optional here
These units have built in freeze protection that depends on being powered. An attic or exterior installation that loses power during a winter storm loses that protection at exactly the moment it is needed, which is a lesson metro Atlanta relearned over the December 2022 freeze.
Where the proposed location is unconditioned, ask specifically how the unit is protected and what happens in a power cut. It is a fair question and it changes some siting decisions.
Where this sits against simply replacing the tank
If the current tank has failed and the household is content with it, a straight tank replacement is considerably cheaper and is often the right answer. Tankless earns its cost where a household genuinely runs out of hot water, or where the floor space matters.
Conversions are permitted and inspected work, because they touch both water piping under the Georgia State Minimum Standard Plumbing Code, which adopts the International Plumbing Code (IPC) with state amendments, and gas supply and venting under Georgia's adopted fuel gas provisions. Will a tankless unit lower my gas bill?
It removes standby losses, which is a real saving, and the size of it depends on how much hot water the household actually uses. Heavy users see more benefit than light ones.
On a retrofit that required substantial gas and venting work, the payback period is long enough that it should not be the main reason for doing it.
Can I fit an electric tankless instead and avoid the gas work?
Whole house electric tankless units draw a very large current and frequently need a service upgrade, which trades one expensive problem for another.
Electric point of use units are genuinely useful for a single distant sink, which is a different and much smaller job.
How often does a tankless unit need servicing?
The manufacturer sets an interval, adjusted for water conditions, and on this supply it is at the longer end. The inlet filter screen also needs cleaning, and a blocked one is a common cause of a sudden flow drop.
Service valves fitted at installation make that job straightforward. Insist on them.
Does it need a permit?
Yes. It involves gas piping, venting and usually electrical, all of which are permitted and inspected through the City of Austell or the relevant county.
Gas work carried out without a permit and a documented pressure test is the version to avoid entirely.
